Christine Thomas, author of the new book ’It doesn’t have to be like this - Women and the Struggle for Socialism’ spoke to Sarah Wrack about why such a book was necessary.
Christine was the Socialist Party’s national women’s organiser from 1994 to 2006. She has written extensively on the question of women’s oppression for the Socialist newspaper and the Socialist Party’s theoretical magazine Socialism Today.
On 26 June, a gay couple were violently assaulted in Shipquay Street, Derry. Just a month previously, two men were found guilty of the homophobic murder of Shaun Fitzpatrick in Dungannon in 2008. These brutal attacks must be met with a firm response from the LGBT community and by workers and young people everywhere.
The host of strikes across many regions of China in recent weeks and months have served to once again highlight the brutal working conditions in the country. The “Sweatshop of the World” has seen a litany of strikes take place within the last months in many multinational corporation factories, many of which have been instigated by young migrant workers.
