Kazakhstan – Mass prison hunger strike against brutal regime

OSCE Chair presides over torture of prisoners – Protests needed urgently! In the “strict regime” prison colony, AK159/6, in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan, a collective hunger strike was declared by the prisoners in protest at alleged brutal beatings, the prison’s military regime and claims of ’frame ups’ of prisoners by the authorities. Starting with a few prisoners at the end of May, the hunger strike has now been joined by the mass of prisoners. Kazakhstan currently holds the Chair of the The Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE). A video, filmed on 28 May, shows the typical brutal treatment of one prisoner

The text of the film is as follows:
“OSCE Chair tortures prisoners

“This is a picture of the prison AK 159/6, built on the site of one of Stalin’s GULAG camps near the village of Dolinka, in the Karaganda region (filmed on 28 May 2010).

Time for mass struggle to fight the cuts

The formation of the so-called “liberal – conservative” coalition will open up a period of instability and class conflict not seen in Britain for decades. The character of this government is already clear. The Tory/Lib Dem coalition agreement is based on “a significantly accelerated reduction in the structural deficit over the course of a Parliament, with the main burden of deficit reduction borne by reduced spending rather than increased taxes.”

2010 - Time for united working class opposition!

The signing of the St Andrews Agreement in 2006 was meant to represent a framework which would enable the Democratic Unionist Party and Sinn Fein to work together as the two largest parties in the Northern Ireland Executive. Peter Hain, Northern Ireland Secretary for State at the time, declared it an “astonishing breakthrough”. This so-called agreement, though, was nothing of the sort.

Mass campaign must be built to save the Mid-Ulster

Through its opposition to the removal of accident and emergency services from the Mid-Ulster Hospital, the “Save the Mid” Campaign has exposed the cynical disregard of the Assembly politicians and Northern Health Trust management towards the lives of ordinary people. With the High Dependency Unit now closed and radiography under threat, it’s clear the Trust management aim to run the Mid-Ulster into the ground.
